Ever wonder what you’d look like in Lego form? Well thanks to Focus Features and their upcoming Pharrell Williams animated biopic, “Piece by Piece,” you won’t have to. In honor of the film‘s release on October 11, the studio is launching a special Piece by Piece Lego Minifigure Generator that will allow fans to build and customize their own digital Lego versions of themselves or others. Committed to fostering a more inclusive world, Lego will offer seven skin tones, 60 hairstyles, and more than 90 outfits to choose from, including items from Pharrell’s fashion line, Billionaire Boys Club.
Inspired by moments from “Piece by Piece,” this generator also provides 60 facial expressions that will grant users the chance to express themselves how they see fit, just as Pharrell did in his film. Once they’ve created their minifigure, they will also be able to create versions standing beside Lego Pharrell or solo. Marketing agency Bond and Tongal, the creator platform that co-produced the film’s animation, developed this generator, which is already available on both mobile and desktop platforms and can be accessed by clicking here.
“Piece by Piece” is directed by Academy Award-winning documentarian Morgan Neville, who has covered other celebrity lives in films like “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?,” “Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain,” and most recently “Steve! (Martin): A Documentary in Two Pieces.” With his examination of the life of music and fashion legend Pharrell Williams however, Neville takes on a new approach, animating interviews and recreations of Pharrell’s life using Legos. The film features conversations with Gwen Stefani, Kendrick Lamar, Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, and more, all appearing in Lego form. It made its premiere last month at the Telluride Film Festival and is set to close out the BFI London Film Festival in October.
In our review of the film, IndieWire wrote, “Well-executed gags and fantastical visual flourishes make creative use of the Lego framing, proving it much more than an empty stunt. It’s no surprise ‘fun’ was the operative word espoused by many Telluride patrons exiting the Herzog theater post-screening.”
