Martin Scorsese saw “I Saw the TV Glow” and now he’s giving it a glowing review.
The auteur told AP that Jane Schoenbrun‘s sophomore indie feature is among his favorite recent films. “I Saw the TV Glow” debuted at Sundance to rave reviews and stars Justice Smith and Brigette Lundy-Paine as a duo that become fundamentally impacted by their shared fandom of a series.
“There was one film I liked a great deal I saw two weeks ago called ‘I Saw the TV Glow.’ It really was emotionally and psychologically powerful and very moving,” Scorsese said. “It builds on you, in a way. I didn’t know who made it. It’s this Jane Schoenbrun.”
Schoenbrun later reposted Scorsese’s comments, writing, “I just got a fever and laid down on the ground and started panting” to emphasize their excitement of Scorsese’s praise.
Schoenbrun is also eyeing a sequel. Schoenbrun told USA Today that they have been discussing revisiting the feature with actors Smith and Lundy-Paine.
“In a few years, not 25 years, and only if everyone else wants to do it, too,” Schoenbrun said. “I have quietly talked to Justice and Brigette about it, so there is definitely another side of the prism I’d like to glance through.”
Schoenbrun previously cited “Twin Peaks: The Return” as an influence on how “I Saw the TV Glow” spans decades. Yet fans won’t have to wait as long for Schoenbrun to “return” to “TV Glow.”
“I’ve been thinking about it for quite a while. I always ask myself, ‘Where do the characters go? Is there anywhere else after this?’” Schoenbrun said. “Sometimes there’s not an answer that deserves further exploration, but I do think there is something about this particular movie that needs a yang to its yin. I don’t think it’s something people will be expecting, but it will be something that’s very much in the same world, from the other side of a looking glass.”
Meanwhile, as Scorsese is heaping praise on Schoenbrun’s artistry, Scorsese is also pray-sing with his own Fox Nation original streaming series, “Martin Scorsese Presents: The Saints.” Scorsese hosts, narrates, and executive produces the docudrama show, which will release weekly through December 8, with episodes focusing on the history of a singular saint.
