With well over $300 million in box office receipts and counting, “The Hangover Part II” is a bonafide smash hit. Before the movie came out, there was already talk of a third entry in the comedy franchise and after audiences flocked to the movie opening weekend, it didn’t take long for Warner Bros. to hire back Craig Mazin to get writing the script for a followup. And while the cast has busy calendars in the immediate future — Bradley Cooper starts “The Place Beyond The Pines” this summer with “The Crow” and possibly “Paradise Lost” waiting in the wings; Ed Helms returns to “The Office” in the fall; Zach Galifianakis shoots “Southern Rivals” with Will Ferrell this summer — it looks like they’re already getting calls to firm them up for another boozy adventure.
In a cover story interview in the latest issue of Rolling Stone, the always candid Galifianakis doesn’t beat around the bush. “They want to do a ‘Hangover III,’” he said. “I’m getting fricking phone calls already.”
While there has been some speculation about the city The Wolfpack will head to next to wreak their unique brand of destruction — Amsterdam has been a popular rumor — it appears that as suggested, the storyline will take a bit of a turn from the wedding-plans-go-sour premise of the first two films. Galifianakis tells the magazine that in the next movie, his character of Alan will be in a mental hospital with Phil and Stu tasked with helping him break out. Todd Phillips has already said he wants the next entry to end the franchise but we’re just happy it won’t be a carbon copy of the first and second movies.
Of course, the question of when this will shoot still needs to be worked out, but if you want to know how serious Warner Bros. are about making the film — they’ve already bought the domain names for the future website.
