Dwayne Johnson has been an actor divided between making paydays with terrible family movies while trying to build up a more respectable career as an action star. Case in point: while he starred in “Fast Five” this year, his next film to hit theaters will be “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.” But it looks like another big sequel in 2012 will find the former wrestler taking a big role.
Deadline reports that Johnson is circling the role of Roadblock in “G.I. Joe: Cobra Strikes.” Set to be directed by Jon Chu, best known for his entries in the “Step Up” franchise and that Justin Bieber concert movie, the film is dumping most of the cast of the previous film with only Channing Tatum (Duke), Ray Park (Storm Shadow) and Lee Byung-Hung (Snake Eyes) expected to return and it appears some new faces will populate the movie as well. Roadblock — a cousin of Heavy Duty — is primarily known for being a heavy machine gunning good guy, and also for his cooking skills.
Anyway, he’s a huge, popular character and frankly seems like a solid fit for Johnson. As for the film, our expectations our low but considering the first one was such a train wreck, it can only get better from here right? “Zombieland” writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have penned the screenplay so that’s a small sliver of hope. Filming will get underway later this year with an August 10, 2012 release date already stamped.
