When you’re hot, you’re hot and sometimes you gotta make some hard choices and for Ryan Gosling, he’ll have to put those plans on directing on hold for now.
Last month at Cannes, it was announced that Gosling would not only star in, but also direct, a remake of obscure 1980 Taylor Hackford film “The Idolmaker,” a project that’s set up at MGM. The film is a biopic of music producer and promoter Bob Marcucci, who managed ‘50s rock’n’roll stars like Frankie Avalon and Fabian before burning out, although he continued to work in show business, including producing Bill Murray‘s “The Razor’s Edge” in the 1980s. But alas, his busy schedule has forced him to bow out. Deadline reports that Gosling has told MGM that he’s too busy to take it on and the studio will continue to develop the project.
So what is keeping Gosling so busy? We’ll he’s reteaming with his “Blue Valentine” director Derek Cianfrance to shoot “The Place Beyond The Pines” in July and he’ll follow that with “Gangster Squad” with Ruben Fleischer behind the camera. And after that Warner Bros. is hoping to get Gosling and “Drive” director Nicolas Winding Refn back together again for “Logan’s Run.”
So while we may have to wait to see what Gosling can do behind the camera, he’s quietly racking up a lot of time with strong filmmakers that will certainly help inform what kind of director he’ll be when he gets to it.
