Reveals That He’s Still Thinking About A ‘Kick-Ass’ Sequel’
It has been a pretty excellent week for candid director interviews. If you haven’t seen it, Dave Poland’s interview with Todd Phillips is practically a classic with the helmer spending the opening minutes of the interview ripping into the movie blogger and then fast forward to the end where it caps it off particularly memorably. And with “X-Men: First Class” coming out next week, Matthew Vaughn has hit the press circuit and been dropping truth bombs all over the place, not hiding from the various queries that have come his way.
MTV are one of the latest outlets to speak with the director and they couldn’t help but ask about the odd choice to include Take That on the soundtrack to the ’60s set film, with the Brit boy band unveiling their new single, “Love Love” over the closing credits of the movie. Vaughn admitted that the move was purely a commercial one and they want to make sure it’s not just bony geek boy asses filling the seats at the multiplex.
“I think there’s a lot for women to enjoy in this film,” he said. “Remember ‘Armageddon‘ [and] the Aerosmith song that got girls who probably wouldn’t have originally gone to see ‘Armageddon’ hearing there was a love song, and [saying], ‘Oh, maybe there is something in the film?’ . . . So it’s pure commerce, to be blunt, and I want women to see this film.”
Well, we appreciate the honesty, but at least Aerosmith’s music wasn’t anachronistic to the film and Vaughn also seems to forget that at the time, the video for Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” was everywhere. As far as we know, no video for Take That’s “Love Love” has been cut with ‘First Class’ footage (though, hell, maybe it’s one of the bajillion clips that seem to hit the web every two hours from the Fox marketing department). Anyway, we’ll see if Robbie Williams and company get their female fanbase into theaters next weekend.
Remember yesterday when Vaughn said doing a “Kick-Ass” sequel would be “crass”? Well, he also said that, “My business brain just says do ‘Kick-Ass 2,’ shoot it and get it out there and it would make a lot of money” and speaking with /Film he reveals that it’s still very much a possibility though again, he has reservations.
“We’re still discussing that at the moment. We might do it. People forget that ‘Kick Ass’ we made for $28 million and now with DVD and everything else has made $225 million in revenue so it’s done great business. A lot of people say it could be like ‘Austin Powers‘ how the first one people couldn’t get their heads around, they all discovered it on video and then the second one was a huge blockbuster,” he explained. “My theory is I don’t know how to make sure ‘Kick Ass 2’ is as good as ‘Kick Ass 1.’ I enjoyed making the movie so much and I loved working with all the characters in it so who knows? There could be one but if I do a sequel to that it’s gotta be just as good, if not better.”
So don’t give up hope Mark Millar!
