F. Gary Gray has had a bit of a bumpy ride in finding his next film after “Law Abiding Citizen.” Last year he was on board to direct the video game adaptation “Kane & Lynch” with Bruce Willis and Jamie Foxx before that project ran into development hell, and earlier this year he was shortlisted for “G.I. Joe: Cobra Strikes” (with that job going to Jon Chu) but it looks like he’s landed on something new.
Deadline reports that Gray is set to direct “The Last Days Of American Crime.” Sam Worthington signed on to the long brewing project two years ago and, based on the graphic novel, the film takes place in a near-future where the government is going to rollout mind control technology that kills the criminal impulse, with the actor playing a crook looking to pull off one last heist.
The film has a script from Karl Gajdusek (Joel Schumacher‘s forthcoming “Trespass,” Joseph Kosinski‘s developing “Oblivion“) and will be shopped in Cannes this week in anticipation of a September start date. Sounds like some great material but the combination of Gray and Worthington pretty much puts our expectations at a minimum.
