While we may bemoan studios forever clinging to sequels and franchises, there is a very good reason why. They make shitloads of money. Thus far, “The Fast And The Furious” franchise has brought just under $1 billion worldwide at the box office, doing more than triple the budget for these films. That’s in-freakin-sanity. And with “Fast Five” revving its engines to hit theaters next week, it’s hardly surprising that Universal already have their eyes on a sixth installment.
THR reports that Universal have have struck a two-year, first look deal with writer Chris Morgan and he’ll kick it off by starting work on “Fast Six.” Morgan is no stranger around the Universal lot. He penned the third, fourth and fifth “Fast And Furious” movies, as well as “Wanted” and the upcoming “47 Ronin.” He’s also going to be working on that weird toy movie “Bakugan” that was announced at the end of last year.
But as least he’s well aware of the sphere he excels in, which is probably why the studio loves him. “I grew up on ‘Raiders,’ ‘Lethal Weapon,’ ‘Die Hard,’” Morgan told THR. “Those are in my wheel house. Those are the movies I want to find, I want to help make. They’re genre movies but heroic ones, ones that have a hyper-real sense to them. Summer movies.”
Anyway, as long as he keeps printing money, he’ll have a home at Universal. “Fast Five” vrooms into theaters on April 29th.
