While it didn’t get more glamorous when John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Lee Bouvier tied the knot, after the President passed on she entered another high profile power marriage with Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis. And now it looks he’s about to get his own movie that will profile his touchy relationship with the Kennedys.
Vulture reports that director Fernando Meirelles is teaming with his “City Of God” screenwriter Bráulio Mantovani on the appropriately named “Onassis.” Based on Peter Evans’ book “Nemesis: The True Story of Aristotle Onassis, Jackie O, and the Love Triangle That Brought Down the Kennedys” the story will apparently focus on Aristotle’s contentious relationship with Bobby Kennedy who had investigated his business practices and barred him from trading the within U.S. It gets better: Evans asserts that their power struggle, which also included a battle over access with Jackie O, got so heated that Aristotle eventually financed the assassination of Bobby Kennedy. Uh, where’s Oliver Stone when you need him?
The project is drawing comparisons to “The Godfather,” though it seems to be in early stages at this point. But it sounds like crackerjack, if not totally controversial material, and while studios are shying away from dramas this seems just too good to resist. Merilles is currently filming “360,” the relationship drama starring Anthony Hopkins, Rachel Weisz, Ben Foster and Jude Law. The film has an official blog with several behind-the-scenes videos; take a look at a couple below.
