Cliff Martinez Scoring ‘Contagion’
While we’ve lately been going off about the lack of quality female-led comedies with last year’s “Easy A” and “Bridesmaids,” “Bad Teacher” and “Friends With Benefits” on the way, it seems at least that gap will be filled for now. But another genre that has been largely void of strong female roles has been action films, but Steven Soderbergh is about to make a distinct impression in that field with his upcoming “Haywire.”
Featuring an all-star cast including Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum, Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Bill Paxton, Michael Angarano, Matthieu Kassovitz and Antonio Banderas, the picture is a gritty spy thriller written by Lem Dobbs (”The Limey”) and stars MMA fighter Gina Carano as a black ops soldier on a mission of revenge after she’s double crossed by one of her team-mates (we read the script and it’s taut, lean and mean; typically no-nonsense work by Dobbs). And now we have our first look at Carano in action (via MMA Madman), beating the shit out of McGregor on a beach.
What can say about these pics except that Carano is looking badass and that we can’t wait for this thing to arrive. Speaking of which, it’s probably pretty obvious by now with nothing in the way of trailers or marketing material, that the previously revealed April release date isn’t coming. We’ve been hearing a few things about the picture and apparently August is the next new target date though nothing is confirmed just yet.
Meanwhile, Soderbergh’s other massive ensemble film, the virus thriller “Contagion” is marching toward its fall release date. Starring Kate Winslet, Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Marion Cotillard, Jude Law and many more, Soderbergh recently said about the film, “It’s a horror movie actually. We kill kids. It’s brutal. It’s scary.” Awesome.
Film Music Reporter has revealed that longtime Soderbergh collaborator Cliff Martinez (“Sex, Lies and Videotape,” “Kafka,” “Underneath,” “The Limey,” “Traffic,” “Solaris“) has been tapped for the score. “Contagion” will infect theaters on October 21st.
