Audiences seem to be cooling on wig-wearing, “I’ll-do-anything-just-send-me-a-script” Nicolas Cage. His medieval flick “Season Of The Witch” opened at number three, and over the weekend, “Drive Angry 3D” arrived with an empty tank opening way down the list at number nine. But Cage, for whatever it’s worth, is still a name that gets lower-budgeted action fare moving and certainly dinosaur bones and castles don’t pay for themselves. Just before the end of the year, Cage signed on to the thriller “Medallion,” and things are still moving forward on the project despite his dodgy box office prospects these days.
From a script by the hot scribe David Guggenheim (”Safe House”), “Medallion” follows a panicked thief who has only a few hours to find his kidnapped daughter, locked in the trunk of a New York City taxicab. Yes, comparisons to “Taken” are already being made. THR reports that Malin Akerman is now on board, playing Cage’s ex-girlfriend who also happens to be a former bank robber. We can’t imagine breaking into the trunk of a car requires the same skill set as cracking a safe, but what do we know?
The film will reteam Cage with “Con Air” director Simon West so there’s a sliver of hope this will be slightly above average. It goes in front of cameras later this month in New Orleans.
