When Quentin Tarantino dropped his list of favorite movies of 2010, it raised a lot of questions regarding his choices, which included “Robin Hood” and “Knight & Day” and was topped off by “Toy Story 3.” But the biggest omission for most people was Sofia Coppola‘s “Somewhere,” a film awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival by the Tarantino-led jury. Vulture got in touch with the director who was surprised at how far and wide his list got read, and he explains why the film was left out.
“I’m a little embarrassed by it, actually,” Tarantino said. “Because it was never meant to be a dig against Somewhere, or Sofia. I simply didn’t consider any of the films I’d seen in Venice for the list.” Tarantino explains that in compiling his list he left out anything he saw at Venice because he was “on official duty” and not seeing the films “theatrically, independently.” But if he could go back in time, the film would have ranked pretty high on his list.
“Now I wish I’d put it on there — I didn’t think anyone would pay attention,” Tarantino said. “If I’d known it was going to get out, I’d have put it in my top ten.” So there you go — Tarantino’s own hard and fast list making rules are the reason “Somewhere” didn’t make the grade.
