Some new “True Grit” characters posters have landed today and they keep up the solid tone the film‘s marketing team have evinced thus far, that of a gritty, no holds barred western from the Coen Brothers. But as it’s pretty much the last holdout to screen for critics, is it going to be the Oscar contender everyone thinks it is?
We’ve had a chance to read the script and while we’re confident that the film will be every bit as entertaining as the trailers have suggested, it lacks the sort of over-arching profundity and punch-to-the-guy impact of previous Coen outings. We have reservations about its Oscar chances, though Hailee Steinfeld definitely has a chance at sneaking in a nomination if the performance is there; it’s a pretty wide open field this year. But as for Matt Damon, Jeff Bridges and Josh Brolin, though they’ll undoubtedly be in fine form, judging by what we’ve seen on the page, we don’t think they will be upsetting the already established contenders that have been knocking around the prognosticator sites for the past couple of weeks.
But either way, we’re definitely still excited to see the picture and are expecting a wickedly good time at the theater. “True Grit” hits theaters on December 22nd.
