Cate Blanchett is taking on the U.N. by way of Hillary Clinton meets Margaret Thatcher garb in a first look at upcoming comedy “Rumours.”
The film is written and directed by Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson, with Bleecker Street distributing. While no release date has been announced yet, the feature is expected to be released in 2024, and debuted first look footage as part of Bleecker Street’s 10-year anniversary reel.
Oscar winner Blanchett co-stars alongside fellow Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander, Roy Dupuis, Charles Dance, Denis Ménochet, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Rolando Ravello, Takehiro Hira, and Zlatko Burić. “Rumours” follows the seven leaders of the world’s wealthiest liberal democracies at the annual G7 summit after they become lost in the woods and face increasing peril while attempting to draft a provisional statement regarding a global crisis.
Ari Aster executive produces through his and Lars Knudsen’s Square Peg production company, marking the banner’s second collaboration with Bleecker Street behind “Sasquatch Sunset.”
“Rumours” is a Canadian-German co-production, with financing from Telefilm Canada and Manitoba Film & Music, Orogen Entertainment Ltd. and Minnow Productions, in association with ZDF/ARTE. Producers include Liz Jarvis for Buffalo Gal Pictures and Philipp Kreuzer for Maze Pictures. Executive producers are Andrew Karpen and Kent Sanderson for Bleecker Street, Jörg Schulze for Maze Pictures, and Phyllis Laing for Buffalo Gal Pictures. Executive producers for Orogen Entertainment are Blair Ward, Anders Erden, Lauren Case, and Eric Harbert. Exec producers also include Gillian Hormel, Mary Aloe, and Stefan Kapelari. Laokoon Film Group’s Judit Stalter is co-producer along with exec producers Gábor Sipos and Gábor Rajna. Elevation Pictures is distributing in Canada, and Plaion Pictures in Germany. Protagonist Pictures is handling international sales.
Blanchett is next appearing in video-game adaptation “Borderlands” directed by Eli Roth. Blanchett’s co-star and fellow Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis shared a sneak peek at Blanchett in character on Instagram, writing, “Welcome to BORDERLANDS and a secret BTS shot I took of Lilith, our legendary heroine, psycho blasting, vault hunting, vixen with a bad attitude and two Oscars to add to the baddasery in her tool belt. The once and future Queen of EVERYTHING, #cateblanchett.”
Additional titles featured in the Bleecker Street anniversary reel include Uberto Pasolini’s “The Return,” “Ezra,” “Treasure,” “The Fabulous Four,” “Slingshot,” and Mike Leigh’s “Hard Truths.”
