Andrew Garfield is unfriending “The Social Network” for its rumored sequel.
The actor told Esquire in the below video that while screenwriter Aaron Sorkin has teased a follow-up film, Garfield most likely not would reprise his role of early Facebook investor Eduardo Saverin.
“I think anything that Aaron [Sorkin] does is going to be really, really powerful and interesting, and if he’s feeling drawn to a subject, you know it’s got some juice in it. I’d be excited [about a sequel],” Garfield said. “I don’t imagine I’d be part of it because I think Eduardo is just living off his billions in Singapore.”
Garfield jokingly added, “People think Eduardo got [screwed] over but he’s a billionaire in Singapore, and I’m sitting here, sweating, talking about myself to a bunch of strangers.”
The “Spider-Man” alum shared that collaborating with Sorkin is “like working with one of our great playwrights. It’s heaven.”
Sorkin previously told The Hollywood Reporter in 2021 that he wanted to pen a script that exposed “the dark side” of Facebook. He later said that a “Social Network” follow-up script is in the works about how Facebook contributed to the January 6 insurrection.
Oscar-winning feature “The Social Network” was released in 2010 and won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. It recently celebrated its 14-year anniversary on October 1.
Garfield reflected on working with “The Social Network” director David Fincher, and shared how the auteur comforted him after his Oscar snub.
“He’s such a beautiful man. He’s such a kind, generous, decent man,” Garfield said of Fincher. “Everyone says, ‘Oh, he does so many takes.’ I’m like, ‘Hell yeah, he does!’ I love it. There’s nothing worse as an actor [than] to go home at the end of the day, going, ‘Oh, I should have done this’ or ‘I should have tried that, that could have been there…’ And I inevitably do not do that with David. He [does] 100 effing takes.”
The “We Live in Time” actor continued, “This is a bit of weird, vulnerable story to tell, but you know, like all the Oscar stuff, like the awards campaign? My first time ever, that had been a thing people were saying to me. And a lot of the chat was, ‘You’re definitely going to get nominated.’ I’m like, ‘Are you serious? That’s effing nuts, really?’ And that didn’t happen. I wasn’t nominated for the Oscar. And the first person that called me after the nominations came out was David. And without saying anything, he started listing all of his favorite performances that never got nominated for Academy Awards. I was just saying, ‘You didn’t need to do that, man, but the fact that you did…’ That just speaks to him as a sensitive, good dad. You know what I mean? That’s a good dad move. Having his approval over anything else meant well to me.”
And like Garfield, Fincher has stated that he most likely will not return for a “Social Network” sequel. Fincher told The Guardian in 2023 that while Sorkin has discussed revisiting the true story with him, any follow-up would be “a can of worms.”
