Christopher McQuarrie To Take On Navy SEAL Drama ‘Rubicon’

Even though he’s already rolling on “One Shot” with Tom Cruise, writer/director Christopher McQuarrie is not slowing down his busy schedule. In case you didn’t know, the New York Comic-Con kicked off yesterday and today comes an announcement of a new project that will see McQuarrie dipping his toes in a few different areas.

No, it’s not the canceled AMC show, but “Rubicon” is an ambitious project by Mark Long and Dan Capel that will become a movie, videogame and graphic novel. McQuarrie will write, produce and direct the project — at least the movie part anyway — in what is being ambitiously described as a “Seven Samurai“-esque tale that will take place in Afghanistan with the Navy SEALs squaring off against the Taliban. Apparently, Capel was a founding member of SEAL Team 6, the squad that took down Osama Bin Laden, while McQuarrie’s brother commanded a SEAL group as well, so they won’t be lacking for insider info. The project comes a long at time with movies based around the subject matter are a bit of a hot new thing, particularly with Kathryn Bigelow prepping her forthcoming flick for an Oscar season release next year.

It’s early days, and there are lots of directions this can go it, but here’s hoping the filmmakers ditch going the straight thriller route and try something a bit more layered and nuanced. We already saw with the recent “Act of Valor” trailer the way this topic can be tackled poorly. [Deadline]
