It seems the flow of movies to becoming television programs isn’t set to end anytime soon. Just this morning, it was revealed that “Universal Solider” was going to make it’s way to small screens and so far this past year has seen development start on TV versions of “The Lincoln Lawyer,” “Taken” and “The Transporter” (the latter has already gone in front of cameras). Well, you can add one more to the list as Deadline reveals that “The Adjustment Bureau” will now get episodic.
The decision to go this route is a bit of a no brainer. Though the initial release date delays gave some worry that the film was troubled (the truth was, as George Nolfi told us, Matt Damon’s hectic calendar pushed back scheduled additional photography), when it hit theaters this spring it not only did brisk business taking in over $120 million worldwide, but it was a favorite with critics and audiences. Adapted from a short story by Philip K. Dick, the story centered a politician who discovers the fate of humanity is controlled by a few people pulling the strings for a higher power and he decides to try and break free not only for his own sake, but for love as well. A smart, entertaining blend of sci-fi and romance, the movie was a one of the spring’s most pleasant surprises and a weekly program centering on that world could be an entertaining prospect.
But just how exactly the premise will be formatted for television show will up to former “Smallville” executive producers Darren Swimmer and Todd Slavkin who are writing the screenplay. No word yet on what their approach will be, but there is certainly more than one doorway they go through with the setup (sorry, bad pun). The project is set up over at Syfy, which isn’t just appropriate given the nature of the story but also because it’s branch of the mega Universal Films who released “The Adjustment Bureau” in the first place. Synergy, folks.
