Plus Lots Of New Stills & Set Photos From The Film
Update: Hi-res versions of the EW pics have arrived plus a couple of new snaps from “The Avengers.”
Ok, well, hopefully the photos inside will look less awkward. And is it just us or are Marvel films looking more and more cartoony a la “Daredevil” and “The Fantastic Four” by the minute? Never mind, true believers. Even though you’ve seen a quick teaser trailer from the end of “Captain America” (below in case you missed it), and you’ve already seen every silly-looking set photo available (even Chris Evans laments them), Entertainment Weekly has a sort-of-first look at Marvel’s “The Avengers” this week, as they’ll grace the cover and presumably there’ll be some press shots inside the issue as well.
If we examine the cover closely, Scarlett Johansson‘s head looks way too gigantic for her body. Robert Downey Jr.‘s Tony Stark haircut looks like it’s morphed into something out of a Kid N’ Play music video and Mark Ruffalo looks really out of place — we suppose his dark and scary photo is supposed to hint at what’s lurking inside him?
Joss Whedon of “Buffy The Vampire Slayer,” “Firefly” and “Serenity” is directing and according to the actors in the film, “The Avengers” coming together to “unite” is a term they use very loosely. “Just because they’re super heroes doesn’t mean they’re super friends,” Jeremy Renner told EW. Marvel diehards will probably be interested to know that Whedon was apparently obsessively rewriting dialogue as he went along (that’s a headline for someone, for sure). “There is a weird element of: they handed me one of the biggest movies of all time, and I’m making it up as I go,” he said.
Coming Soon has another look at the same image from the cover, this time with the characters not photoshopped apart — but obviously still not from a photoshoot where everyone was in the same room. It looks equally odd, if not worse, but we suppose we’re not the target audience for this one — or at least this writer doesn’t feel like he is anymore (and “Iron Man” was super entertaining, but it’s been diminishing returns ever since). But clearly this will be the most anticipated film of 2012 in certain circles and will likely make a disgusting bundle of cash at the box-office. The cast is rounded out by Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Samuel L. Jackson who plays Nick Fury (not seen here), Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Clark Gregg and Cobie Smulders as SHIELD agents and in case you’re unaware, Robert Downey Jr. plays Iron Man, Chris Evans is Captain America, Mark Ruffalo is The Incredible Hulk, Jeremy Renner plays Hawkeye and Scarlett Johansson is the Black Widow. “The Avengers” hits theaters May 4, 2012
Updated: Three new ‘Avengers’ photos have arrived. Two are definitely set photos with lots of green screen in the BG and one could arguably be called a press shot of RDJ and Chris Evans. Update 2: Coming Soon’s found even more scans from the issue. Plus there are also these larger character portraits from the cover of EW.
