‘Coriolanus,’ ‘Contagion’ & Jason Statham’s ‘Safe’ Get Posters

Summer is ending which means the multiplex will be a little bit quieter come the fall. As gum gets scraped off the floor, and popcorn swept up, here are some of the posters that will be going up in a theater near you.

First off, Ralph Fiennes‘ directorial debut “Coriolanus” has been earning solid buzz since debuting at the Berlin Film Festival this year with early Oscar talk surrounding Vanessa Redgrave‘s performance. Certainly, the first trailer for the film reveals that this is the grittiest Shakespeare adaptation in some time. Starring Fiennes, Redgrave, Gerard Butler, Jessica Chastain, Brian Cox and James Nesbitt, the story has been relocated to contemporary times and follows General Coriolanus as he enters the Senate on the insistence of his mother. However, when he is banished for rioting after failing to win the public’s support, he must team with sworn enemy, Tullus Aufidius, in taking out revenge on the city. And then lots of shit gets blown up. Like we said, this isn’t your daddy’s Bard, and the poster, with Fiennes and Butler wearing war paint of sorts, should be an indication of that. “Coriolanus” hits TIFF next month and will open on December 2nd.

If you have a tickle in your throat and even slightly suffer from hypochondria, you might want to wait until you feel a bit better before seeing Steven Soderbergh‘s virus thriller “Contagion” because it will make you more wary of germs than ever before. A new poster has landed for the movie — which is basically a mashup of the character one-sheets — but if anything, it seems to be a reminder that no character is getting away unaffected in this flick. Starring Marion Cotillard, Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, Bryan Cranston, John Hawkes, Elliott Gould, Demetri Martin and Jennifer Ehle the film premieres in Venice before opening on September 9th.

Finally, if just want to shut off your brain for 90 minutes, here comes Jason Statham. With “Blitz” hitting DVD this month and “The Killer Elite” arriving in September, “Safe” will mark The Stafe’s third movie in the three successive months when it opens in October. It will be his fourth movie to hit this year — are you tired of the guy yet? If not, this should provide more generic thrills. Directed by Boaz Yakin, Statham portrays a former elite operative who must protect an adolescent girl (Catherine Chan) from the bad guys. So basically, it’s “The Transporter 3” (where he had to protect the girl) mashed up with “The Killer Elite” (in which he also plays an elite operative of some kind) — at least the actor knows his range/limitations. The film opens on October 28th. [THR/Yahoo/IGN]
