If you didn’t lodge your complaint way back when, there’s no point in kvetching now. The “Footloose” remake is signed, sealed and almost delivered. The film that does not star unlikely teen heartthrob Kevin Bacon, or love interest Lori Singer, or have Kenny Loggins’ version of the original theme, opens nationwide in theaters on October 14th.
Directed by Craig Brewer (he of deep-fried and urban dramas “Hustle & Flow” and “Black Snake Moan“), the 2011 version of “Footloose” stars stars Kenny Wormald, Julianne Hough, Andie MacDowell and Dennis Quaid. Further proof that this film is right around the corner is news of the soundtrack that will arrive in stores on September 27th. While the 12-track disc does not feature Loggins’ version of the iconic “Footloose” theme, it does feature American country music artist Blake Shelton‘s remake/cover/reboot, whatever you want to call it.
Released on Atlantic Records and Warner Music Nashville, the eclectic soundtrack will feature country acts like Big & Rich, Hunter Hayes, Jana Kramer and Zac Brown of the Zac Brown Band, pop stars like Cee Lo Green (teaming up with Kenny Wayne Shepherd), Victoria Justice, hip-hop via David Banner and rawk courtesy of The Smashing Pumpkins.
Ella Mae Bowen contributes a cover of Bonnie Tyler‘s “Holding Out For A Hero” and Jana Kramer will deliver what we assume will be a nu-country-fied version of Deniece Williams‘ “Let’s Hear It for the Boy.” The soundtrack includes eight new songs in total along with remakes of four of the classic hits from the original soundtrack.
In “Footloose” (2011), Ren MacCormack (played by newcomer Kenny Wormald) is transplanted from Boston to the small southern town of Bomont where he experiences a heavy dose of culture shock. A few years prior, the community was rocked by a tragic accident that killed five teenagers after a night out and Bomont’s local councilmen and the beloved Reverend Shaw Moore (Dennis Quaid) responded by implementing ordinances that prohibit loud music and dancing. Not one to bow to the status quo, Ren challenges the ban, revitalizing the town and falling in love with the minister’s troubled daughter Ariel (Julianne Hough) in the process.
