While it once looked as if this summer would be dominated at the box office by the superhero flick, things haven’t quite worked out that way. Instead, 2011 has been the year where the R-rated comedy boom went supernova, with “The Hangover Part II” being the second-biggest grossing film of the year, “Bridesmaids” proving to be Judd Apatow‘s biggest hit to date (and outgrossing “X-Men First Class,” “Super 8” and “Green Lantern” in the process), “Bad Teacher” taking six times its budget internationally in three weeks, and “Horrible Bosses” opening this weekend with an impressive $28 million take, beating out the more kid-friendly “Zookeeper.”
There’s more on the way, with “Friends With Benefits,” “The Change-Up” and “30 Minutes or Less” all landing in the next few weeks, and now the U.K. are getting in on the act, as late August sees the popular foul-mouthed British sitcom “The Inbetweeners” move to the big-screen in “The Inbetweeners Movie,” and HeyUGuys has just debuted the (very NSFW) full trailer over at their site.
And put it this way… we’re not expecting the next “Bridesmaids.” Or even the next “Sex Drive.” At its best the series managed a “Superbad“-style mix of crudity and sweet awkwardness, but the plot, which sees the world’s oldest 18-year-olds heading off to Malia, on the Greek island of Crete, seems to mean that the worst Nuts Magazine excesses have been amped up, and we rolled our eyes more often than we cracked a smile across the two minutes. And if you’re unfamiliar with the source material, we have no idea what you’d make of it.
Still, comedy trailers notoriously play to the lowest-common-denominator, the supporting cast has a few ringers, like excellent stand-up Greg Davies and Jessica Knappett, formerly of the comedy group Lady Garden, and Mike Skinner of The Streets is writing some original music for the film, so there’s stuff in the plus column as well. It hits U.K. cinemas on August 19th, with no word on a U.S. release as yet. Watch the trailer below.
