As theater owners attempt to stabilize consumer moviegoing habits after the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic and Hollywood’s pivot to streaming, chains like Alamo Drafthouse have found success by serving full meals and alcohol during films. But Danny McBride isn’t sold on the idea.
In a recent interview with GQ, the “Righteous Gemstones” star sounded off about his distaste for food and alcohol in theaters. He explained that he feels like the combination of a bar and a movie theater brings out the worst parts of both places.
“I hate it, I can’t stand it,” McBride said when the conversation turned to theaters that serve full meals and alcohol. “I also don’t think it makes sense to combine booze with movies. You’re going to have to piss. Doesn’t alcohol make you want to get up and get loose? You don’t want to sit there, drink beer, and just be quiet. I would have no interest in going to see a movie and just pounding IPAs. Just fucking falling asleep.”
McBride might be opposed to some of the hottest theatergoing trends, but he’s not a complete purist either. He said he’d be much more interested in theaters that served cannabis products instead of alcohol.
“If I went to a theater, and it was like, ‘Here’s your popcorn and here’s fucking weed,’ I feel like that would be an awesome little combo right there,” McBride said.
