On this week’s episode of “Screen Talk,” Anne Thompson and Ryan Lattanzio reflect on how the BAFTA nominations inform the Oscar race ahead. Academy Awards nominations will be announced on Tuesday, January 23. Surprisingly, Lily Gladstone was left off the list of the final six actresses at the BAFTAs, but who else is looking strong or weak in the week ahead?

We also talk about the first films we’ve seen (whether virtually, in the case of Anne, or on the ground, in the case of Ryan) at the Sundance Film Festival, which include Carla Guttierez’s documentary “Frida” and Theda Hammel’s COVID-set comedy “Stress Positions.” We also took some time out of our usual awards duties in the past week to catch up with some TV, namely HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country,” starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis. We’re on the same page about that Alaska-set “X-Files”-esque (so far) mystery and can’t wait for more.
