Cillian Murphy‘s Oscar win won’t stop the six seasons and a movie push for “Peaky Blinders.”

The beloved BBC and Netflix series, which concluded in 2022 after Season 6, is set for a film adaptation. Creator Steven Knight told Birmingham World that Murphy will “definitely” be back for the “Peaky Blinders” movie. Murphy starred on the series as gangster Tommy Shelby; the period piece also starred Anya Taylor-Joy, Adrien Brody, and Sam Neill, among other actors.

“He definitely is returning for it,” Knight said of Murphy. “We’re shooting it in September just down the road in Digbeth [in Birmingham].”

Murphy recently won the Best Actor Oscar for “Oppenheimer.” Murphy previously played a decade of supporting roles in other Christopher Nolan films. “Peaky Blinders” had been among Murphy’s few lead performances ahead of “Oppenheimer.”

The actor previously told Rolling Stone UK in 2023 that he would “love to do” a “Peaky Blinders” movie, but added: “It has to be right” for the story.

“Steve Knight wrote 36 hours of television, and we left on such a high,” Murphy said. “I’m really proud of that last series. So, it would have to feel legitimate and justified to do more.”

The Irish actor echoed the sentiment to the Irish Star in February 2024. “I have always said that if Knight delivers a script that I know he can deliver, because he is such a phenomenal writer, I’ll be there,” Murphy said. “If we want to watch 50-year-old Tommy Shelby, I will be there. Let’s do it.”

Knight first announced in July 2022 that a feature film adaptation script was underway. Knight shared that he was looking for production to be onsite where the real Peaky Blinders gang was active, like Digbeth and Small Heath.

“It’s like ‘Peaky’s’ coming home basically,” Knight said during the Heart Breakfast show (via NME) at the time. “I’m just really looking forward to having a ‘Peaky’ event where people can watch it communally. I mean, the social media community is so strong and people talk to each other. But to actually be together physically will be really interesting.”
