The 2024 TCM Film Festival is ringing in its 15th anniversary with a slew of star-studded panels and premieres.
The festival, which takes place in Los Angeles from April 18 to 21, will kick off with a special 35mm screening of “Pulp Fiction” with actor John Travolta in attendance. This year’s festival theme is “Most Wanted: Crime and Justice in Film,” and fittingly, the festival boasts a cast reunion of prison escape drama “The Shawshank Redemption” with stars Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins.
Both “The Shawshank Redemption” and “Pulp Fiction” are celebrating 30 years since their respective 1994 releases.
The festival will close with Mel Brooks’ “Spaceballs,” with Brooks presenting the feature.
Additional programming includes the world premiere of the IMAX restoration of David Fincher‘s “Se7en,” a restoration of “The Searchers” courtesy of Warner Bros. and The Film Foundation with Oscar-nominated writer/director Alexander Payne introducing the film, and “Jeopardy!” host Ken Jennings presenting the U.S. premiere restoration of “The Small Back Room” (1949), restored by The Film Foundation and courtesy of Rialto Pictures.
“Feud: Capote vs. the Swans” actress Diane Lane revisits her 1979 film “A Little Romance” in conversation with TCM host and festival MC Ben Mankiewicz, and iconic rom-com filmmaker Nancy Meyers will be on hand to introduce the world premiere of Warner Bros. and The Film Foundation’s restoration of one of her favorite movies, Alfred Hitchcock’s “North By Northwest” (1959). A cast reunion for 1994’s “Little Women” will also feature Trini Alvarado, Samantha Mathis, and Eric Stoltz.
TCM staple Steven Spielberg will be part of a Q&A with UCLA Film School’s Howard Suber ahead of the director’s cut of Spielberg’s film “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” (1977) screening.
To mark almost 100 years since their short film creation, TCM and Warner Bros. will present “That’s Vitaphone!: The Return of Sound-on-Disc” featuring six Vitaphone vaudeville shorts of the 1920s projected in 35mm. The sound will be played back from their original 16-inch discs on a turntable designed and engineered by Warner Bros. Post Production Engineering Department.
The Festival’s official central gathering point will be The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, which has a longstanding role in movie history and was the site of the first Academy Awards ceremony. Screenings and events during the Festival will be held at the Egyptian Theatre, TCLChinese Theatre IMAX, and the TCL Chinese 6 Theatres.
