Already A Producer and Exec On The Project, The Academy-Award Winning Writer Is Also Getting His Hands Dirty
Screenwriter Steve Zaillian, one of the most well-paid and powerful writers in Hollywood is not idly sitting by and is keeping those writing muscles toned.
Coming off penning David Fincher’s “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo,” a rewrite-rewrite of “Moneyball” and working on “The Girl Who Played With Fire,” the Academy Award winner (for “Schindler’s List“) is now rewriting the remake of the 2007 Spanish-language time travel flick, “Timecrimes.”
Film Rites, Zaillian company’s, picked up the U.S. remake rights in 2008 and as a producer on the film, he will be rewriting a draft already penned by Tim Sexton (“Children of Men“). More importantly, once set up over at United Artists, Zaillain will be moving the project over to Dreamworks where he has a first look deal. Originally directed by Nacho Vigalondo (who remains an executive-producer here, smart move by Film Rites), “Timecrimes” is a labyrinth-like sci-fi thriller that ping-pongs across the narrative in an intricately effective manner (the script to “Source Code” is not entirely dissimilar).
No directors and talent are attached yet, presumably when everyone’s happy with Zaillian’s draft they’ll move forward in that regard. Might we suggest David Cronenberg to direct?
Zaillian also wrote “The Irishman,” sometimes referred to as “I Heard You Paint Houses,” a mob drama that Martin Scorsese will likely do next after “Hugo Cabret” and that will reunite him with Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and perhaps more notably will see the venerable director also working with Al Pacino. Zaillian penned that script ages ago, circa 2007, so its conceivable he’ll earn another super good payday for a simple polish and update.
