It’s been a busy week for awards season prognosticators, as we’ve not only had winners announced at the Gotham Awards and the New York Critics Circle, but also television nominees unveiled for the Critics Choice Awards and now the 2024 AFI Award Honorees have been named as well.
While Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or-winning “Anora” seems to be holding strong, topping nominations at the Gothams, but not winning any, and receiving Best Screenplay recognition from the NYCC, other films are starting to build momentum going into the major contests coming up at the top of next year.
“Sing Sing,” which premiered at TIFF in 2023 and was released this past summer, is proving it has staying power as both lead Colman Domingo and supporting player Clarence Maclin went home with awards at the Gothams and now the film is featured on AFI’s top 10 of the year. People also shouldn’t count out “Wicked” as a major awards player as the film is featured on the list as well and managed to garner Best Film and Best Director from the National Board of Review.
On the TV front, “Shrinking,” now in its second season on Apple TV+, managed to sneak in a spot on AFI’s top 10 and has tracked regularly as one of the most viewed items on the streaming platform, showing it may have more legs than many gave it credit for. Michael Schur’s new show “A Man on the Inside,” starring Ted Danson, similarly has very strong word-of-mouth and is picking up a lot of attention in the last few weeks its been available to stream.
